Skegness is a seaside town located on the Lincolnshire coast of the North Sea, 43 miles (69 km) east of the city of Lincoln.
The name indicates that Skegness has its origin in the Danish period of settlement in England. Local historians say that the town took its name from Skeggi meaning 'bearded one'.
Skegness is the location of the first of the Butlins holiday resorts, built in 1936, which remains within the area to this day.
The 'Skegness is so Bracing' poster featuring The Jolly Fisherman helped to put Skegness on the map and is now world famous. The poster, derived from an oil painting by John Hassall (illustrator), was purchased by the railway company for the 12 guineas.
Two miles out to sea is an offshore drilling platform for gas, and clearly visible from the beach - and indeed several miles further inland - is a large wind farm operated by Centrica.
